TEXAS GENERAL LAND OFFICE BRINGS OILED WILDLIFE REHABILITATION METHODS TO THE CLASSROOM

Last week, Texas General Land Office (GLO) Oil Spill Prevention and Response division teamed up with GLO’s Coastal Resource team to bring oiled wildlife rehabilitation methods to the classroom.

300 elementary students ranging from kindergarten to 5th grade gathered around members of GLO’s Oil Spill and Coastal Resource teams as they discussed the impact that oil spills have on our coastal environment. Giving students an up-close and personal look at what goes on behind the scenes of an oil spill, the GLO brought the teams oiled wildlife rehabilitation bird trailer into the school for students to explore. Team members discussed how the GLO works each and every day to protect and preserve our environment and respond to spills whenever they might occur.

While our Oil Spill and Coastal Resource teams play a critical role in contributing to the preservation efforts of our great state, they also spoke with students about how they too can help take care of the Texas coast. Working to keep the Texas coast in the most pristine condition possible, the GLO’s Adopt-A-Beach program gives students and the community at large the opportunity to help pick up trash and plastics that are far too often left on Texas beaches. It’s important for Texans of all ages, to learn from an early age why programs like Adopt-A-Beach and our Oil Spill Prevention and Recovery Teams are important and necessary for our state’s environment.
